Many people love to trace their roots, retaining a fondness for where they were born – or where their relatives lived in the past. But as county borders have changed and administrative areas have taken over, old county names can be overlooked or even forgotten. This hand-illustrated map (based on Ordnance Survey data), recalls days gone by and shows the historic counties of the North of England and Southern Scotland. It also highlights some famous inhabitants, historic events and just a few of the glorious sights to be discovered in our native lands.
